The people taking up the challenge
The global solar market has seen strong growth of 40% per year since 2000 (it was worth €9 billion in 2005). The current target is to reduce production costs. (…) This involves research programmes on photovoltaic energy systems. Such research and development needs to be supplemented by projects combining photovoltaic energy systems with the development of, for example, smart energy distribution networks. Incorporating these materials and these systems right from the design stage of buildings is a sine qua non for the successful development of this sector. France has groups that are capable of supporting research and development of this kind. Government incentives fixing the price for purchasing photovoltaic energy at €0.55 per kWh are positive signals for developing outlets for the sector, particularly with local authorities.
